Time Flies

Time Flies It’s nearly the end of October, and autumn has finally begun coloring the city of Boston. Baker’s annual piano drop (this time, filled with candy) happened yesterday afternoon, people flocked to Save TFP’s Spooky Skate yesterday night, and the annual pumpkin drop from the Green Building (wonderfully blogged last year by Michael) is tonight. ‘Tis the season for costumes, merriment, and, apparently, smashing things. You have to relieve stress from midterms somehow, right? (I’m a little bit sad that no random leaves ended up in this picture. It’s really cool to see the wind whisk them off the ground and up 12 floors where they flutter around like little scraggly butterflies.) Two weekends ago was Columbus Day (though The Oatmeal  argues that we should call it Bartolomé Day instead, because he was a much nicer guy), and we were given a four-day weekend to catch up on work/sleep/fun/etc. Personally, I seized the opportunity to travel to New York, wander around the city, meet up with friends from high school who also ended up on the East Coast for university, see Big Fish and Matilda, and go to New York Comic Con. One of the greatest parts about college is the independence you acquire once you move away from home. And one huge part of this independence is being able to say, “Hey, MIT, you’re alright. But sometimes I really just have to step away from campus,” and leaving. Because you can. It’s refreshing to see old friends and catch up, to dress in cosplay and geek out with other fans, to go to a city where there are non-academic-seeking tourists and artists and people simply living their lives, and to remember there’s a world outside of psets and tests and the MIT bubble. Initially, my plan was to take video clips and create a Vlogbrothers-esque “Thoughts from Places” video about New York, but that kind of failed. I didn’t bring a nice camera, so all the videos were taken on a phone camera… and are cropped in a thin rectangle… Nice going, Ceri. You really thought that one through. Instead of recording and overlaying commentary, I just quickly edited clips together, added some music, altered some of the sound levels and color balances, and uploaded the grainy derp-project for anyone who still would like to see. Failed blog post idea #398. Maybe someday I’ll make a legitimate video like this on MIT campus one thats shorter and better edited and more purposeful. That pretty much covers the exciting things that have happened. For Halloween/fun, a bunch of friends and I are dressing up as characters from the new Doctor Who series (9 through 11), so I’ll probably end up rambling about how cool they all are. Evaluating the quality of the produced items before packaging makes the personnel aware of the presence of defective items. This is in terms of preventing the instance of delivering poor quality goods to the customers. The managers need to install good quality CCTV cameras for monitoring the ways through which the line managers are performing the allocated duties and responsibilities (Kokubu Kitada, 2015). Implementation of improvements The proposed changes need to be evaluated in order to ensure that they are in alignment with the legal standards. For this, meetings with the stakeholders and shareholders are a wise step towards assessing the effectiveness, appropriateness and feasibility of the proposed changes. Group discussions between the board of directors, managers, employers and employees would result in positive outcomes. Involving the employees in this discussion would help the managers to assess their approach towards the proposed changes (Tyagi et al., 2015). Assisted Suicide Physician assisted suicide presents one of the greatest dilemmas to the medical profession. Should someone who is mentally competent, but deemed terminally ill, be allowed to engage in physician-assisted suicide? According to the First Amendment of The Constitution of The United States, one has the freedom to petition the government for a redress of grievances. The Fourteenth Amendment states, The State cannot deprive any person of life, liberty or property, without due process of law; nor deny any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws. The group believes that a terminally ill patient has the Constitutional right to decide whether or not to end his or her life with the help of a licensed medical doctor. There have been many cases over the years where a terminally ill patient who is mentally competent has made the choice to either partake in physician-assisted suicide or euthanasia. Physician-assisted suicide occurs when the physician provides the patient with the means and/or knowledge to commit suicide(Death and Dying,91). Euthanasia is when the physician administers the death causing drug or agent(Death and Dying,92). The most recent case is that of The State of Florida v. Charles Hall. Charles Hall is dying of AIDS and challenged the State of Florida to let him die by a self-administered lethal injection without fear of prosecution(http://www.rights.org/ deathnet/open.html). On January 31, 1997, a Judge ruled that Charles Hall could take his own life with the aid of a doctor. Senior Judge S. Joseph Davis, brought in from Seminole County, found that Florida's strict privacy law and the equal protection clause in the U.S. Constitution entitled Hall, 35, and Dr. McIver to carry out an assisted death without fear of prosecution (Sun-Sentinel, 1A). On February 11, 1997, Charles Hall's ruling was overturned by the Florida Supreme Court: he no longer has the right to end his own life. He will have to wait until May 9, 1997 until new arguments will be heard. Hall, who has been deemed mentally competent, contracted the virus in 1981 through a blood transfusion. Some of the complications he is encountering from the AIDS virus are arthritis, hepatitis, pneumonia and a brain cyst (http://www.rights.org/deathnet/ open.html). The Oregon Death with Dignity Act allows terminally ill adults who are mentally competent to ask for a prescription for medication for the purpose of ending his or her life in a humane and dignified manner(http://www.rights.org/deathnet/ open.html). This act, Measure 16, was approved by the voters in 1994. Renewed efforts at the Legislative level to overturn Measure 16 may now be anticipated to prevent the law from being used(http://www.rights.org/deathnet/open. html). In June, 1990, the Supreme Court decided that the parents of 32 year old Nancy Beth Cruzan, who had been in a car accident and in what Doctor's called a vegetative state for seven years, could not end her treatment. Later that same year, a Missouri Court ruled that the feeding tube could be removed after evidence that Cruzan would wish to terminate the treatment was proven. Nancy Beth Cruzan died twelve days later(Death and Dying,26). The First Amendment gives one the right to demand the correction of an injustice. Would one not consider a terminal illness an injustice? Charles Hall contracted this deadly disease from a blood transfusion not from shooting drugs or having unprotected sex. So wouldn't Hall be entitled to have this injustice corrected? The Fourteenth Amendment gives one the right to life, liberty, or property, without due process of law. However, is living with complications from a terminal illness, so severe that one is unable to function dependently, life? The government says that it is. Liberty is freedom, but is having complications which do not allow one to be free and independent, freedom? The government says once again that it is. Freedom is also having the ability to make choices. These choices should include the ability to decide to end one's own life when such complications exist. In conclusion, evidence has shown that the First and Fourteenth Amendment of the Constitution entitles citizens of the United States of America the right to die. Coming of Age Novels Essays Coming of Age Novels Essay Coming of Age Novels Essay Coming of age novels, Cold Sassy Tree and To Kill a Mockingbird introduce readers to 14 year old Will Tweedy of Cold Sassy, Georgia and 5 year old Jean Louise â€Å"Scout† Finch of Maycomb County, Alabama. Both characters were brought up in small, close-knit southern towns, with false views of the world, and ignorance to knowledge and experience. As the stories progess however, the two gain a new type of knowledge and realization of the world. Experiences dealing with love, death, racism and discrimination helped the character’s child-like ideas of the world blossom into a more adult-like perspective. Will and Scout had changed in ways both . My paper will further discuss the traits that Scout Finch and Will Tweedy share. Will Tweedy is a teen-aged free spirit, living in Cold Sassy at the beginning of the twentieth century. On July 5, 1906, scandal breaks in the town when Will’s grandfather, Rucker Blakeslee, marries Miss Love Simpson; who is half his age. Rucker married Miss Love barely 3 weeks after his wife Mattie Lou, had died. Scout Finch was only 5 years old when her father, Atticus Finch, took on the role of lawyer for a negro man named Tom Robinson, during the Great Depression. Atticus was talked negatively about throughout the white community of Maycomb. He was thought of as a traitor, and â€Å"nigger lover† (p. 108) Both Will’s and Scout’s families were centers of attention in their towns. Atticus and grandpa Rucker gave them similar adive. Atticus told Scout to pay the name calling no mind, and to stop fighting her classmates when they called him a bad name, or said a bad thing about him. Rucker tells Will to discard the social constraints of Cold Sassy. With the help of these two men, Scout and Will were able to learn how to handle the gossip that spread around town, about their families. Another issue the children were exposed to was discrimination. The blacks in Cold Sassy and Maycomb County, were treated as an inferior race. The blacks of Cold Sassy that worked white households used different dishes for their meals, as Will and Miss Love talked about one morning in the kitchen. â€Å"I mean colored cooks know white people don’t want them using their dishes and things. That’s why they all drink out of jars and eat off of old plates or pie pans. † (P. 205) Scout was first introduced to discrimination with Tom Robinsons trial. On the trial’s ending, Scout learned that blacks are treated differently then whites because they’re a different kind of â€Å"folk†. She also learned that Atticus had no problem defending Tom; and even proved his innocence. But since Tom is black, he was found guilty in the eyes of the white jury. Will Tweedy also has a lesson on love when his relationship with Lightfoot McClendon doesn’t work out. The first time he kissed her, while they were in the cemetary driving his dad’s car, he realized the kiss was a mistake. Lightfoot was a mill girl, and mill town people were looked down upon by the other members of Cold Sassy. After she ran away, Will started to worry about her. It was then that he realized, he had feelings for her in a deep kind of way. The last time he had seen Lightfoot, had been when she came by the store to tell about her engagement to Hosie Roach. Not only was the girl he loved getting married, she was also getting married to Hosie Roach, his enemy. He was saddened about the engagment, but still wished her the best. This lesson on love Will learned was that, love doesn’t always work out the way you might want it to. Scout learns the true meaning of getting to know someone by â€Å"getting in their skin and walking around in it. † (P. 30) Scout used this way of thinking for Boo Radley. Many people in Maycomb thought Boo was a crazy, evil man because of a trial he went through as a teenager. Scout found out however that, that wasn’t the case at all. Boo had done many things for Scout and her brother Jem such as; leaving them gifts in the hollowed tree, stitching up Jem’s pants when he ripped them on the fence, putting a blanket over Scout’s shoulders while she watched the fire, and saving both her and Jem from Mr. Ewells. With all of these nice deeds done for them, Scout concluded that the neighborhood had the wrong idea about Boo, and after walking him home the night he saved them, Scout took a minute to stand out on the porch, and try to see Maycomb the way Boo saw it from his window. Will and Scout both experienced death, but in two different ways. Will’s experiences with death happened with first his grandmother, and then later with his grandfather. Miss Love Simpson had a baby on the way, that Rucker did not know about. Since Will had spent so much time with his grandfather, it was now his job to help take care of the baby, and make sure his grandfather’s legacy is not lost. Scout had experienced death in the forms of her mother and Tom. Scout’s mother had died when she was a baby, so she didn’t remember her much, but her mother’s death affected the way Scout was raised. With her mom dead, Scout was brought up in a household ran by a widowed father, and a colored cook. Both Scout Finch and Will Tweedy learned important lessons at early ages. These lessons are what shaped their now, adult-like perspectives on life, world, people and themselves. Those are some similarities and differences between the two characters.
